Erasmus GAP Study Visits : Understanding and Overcoming Barriers to Student Mobility
As part of the Erasmus+ GAP project, five collaborative study visits held in Porto, Budapest, Versailles, and Berlin brought together international education professionals, faculty, and student-facing staff to explore the complex barriers that limit student mobility across Europe.
A variety of key obstacles to student participation were identified and discussed through interactive workshops, role-play exercises, and structured reflections, including financial insecurity, lack of information, emotional and mental health challenges, and perceptions that mobility is elitist or inaccessible. During these visits, powerful motivators like peer support, personal growth, and career advancement were also identified, and the importance of institutional responsibility was stressed.
Across all visits, the GAP toolkit and self-assessment tool was critically reviewed, with feedback emphasising the need for clearer communication, improved digital usability, and greater alignment between policy and student experience.
Last but not least, a clear message emerged: barriers to mobility are often deeply personal but with the right support systems, no student should have to opt out before they even begin their mobility journey.
